a fair time opportunity for professional visual artists presented by

 

Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA)

and the 41st District Agricultural Association

 

“Celebrating the Creative Arts

of Older Americans”

 

This is an adjudicated and judged multi-media exhibition at the Del Norte County Fair, which runs August 6 to August 9 this year. (Note that this show is hung in the floriculture building each year, and not in the arts & crafts building.) The show is open to all professional northern California and southern Oregon artists that are 60 years of age or older. No group work, class work, copies, projections or work that has been partially or totally prepared by any commercial printing process should be submitted. All media that has been created in the last 2 years and is hangable may be entered.

 

$There will be a non-refundable entry fee; with a limit of two entries per artist.

$There will be cash awards given.

$Copies will also be available at the fairgrounds office beginning July 1

Take work to floral bldg between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on: Tuesday, August 4

Pick up any item not adjudicated into the show. Wednesday, August 5

Enjoy the exhibit in the floriculture building at the fair: August 6 - August 9

Pick up exhibited works between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on: Monday, August 10

How to Enter

1.   REVIEW THIS FAIR EXHIBITOR’S HANDBOOK to select the classes you would like to enter.

2.   READ THE LOCAL AND STATE RULES

3.   READ DEPARTMENT & DIVISION instructions for the classes you have chosen.

  • Copies of the rules are available at the Fair Office if you need them.

4.   ENTRY FORMS:

  • Entry Forms may be picked up from the Fair Office, or downloaded from this web site.
  • You will need a separate entry form for each Department or Category.
  • OUT-OF- COUNTY EXHIBITORS, you may phone the Fair Office (707) 464-9556 for more entry forms.
  • Complete all applicable spaces on the entry forms. Fair Staff will be happy to assist you.
  • Juniors must include their date of birth. Junior entries require a parent’s signature.
  • Fair Staff will fill in exhibitor Codes and Entry Numbers.
  • Be sure to REVIEW AND SIGN YOUR ENTRY FORMS.
  • Take your Entry Forms to the Fair Office. 421 Hwy 101 N., Crescent City, CA 95531, or Fax to (707) 464-9519.
  • Entry forms must be delivered or postmarked by 5: p.m. on the closing date as given for each department.

5.   Bring your exhibits to the fairgrounds ON THE DAYS AND HOURS INDICATED under the Department Headings.

  • At this time pick up your Exhibitor’s Pass.  Adult passes are $14.00, Jr/Sr passes are $7.00

6.   EXHIBIT CARDS will be pre-printed and will be attached when you bring your items to the fair.  Please allow time to do this.

7.   COME AND ENJOY THE FAIR.

8.   PICK UP your exhibits after the close of the Fair.  See release times under the Department Headings.

9.   PREMIUM AWARD CHECKS may be picked up at the fairgrounds office, Monday, August 10th. Any checks not cashed within 90 days will be void.

1.   OFFICIAL DATES OF FAIR:

  • Thursday, August 6, 2009 through Sunday, August 9, 2009.
  • The fair will open to the public at 10:00 a.m. each day of the fair.
  • It will close each night at 10:00 p.m., except Sunday (5:00 p.m.)
  • The livestock barns will close each night at 9:00 p.m. except Sunday (5:00 p.m.)

2.   SANCTION SHOWS:

  • Sanction show rules do not supercede State or Local rules.

3.   4-H, FFA & GRANGE DIVISIONS:

  • Entry is open to residents of Del Norte County only.
  • A child is considered a resident of Del Norte County if Del Norte County is the residence of the child’s parent of court ordered guardian.

4.   ADULT & JUNIOR DIVISIONS:

  • Entry is open to all exhibitors without restriction as to residence.

5.   AGE:

  • Junior Exhibitors must be 9 years old as of January 1, 2009 to exhibit animals.
  • Horse Show participants must be 9 yrs old as of December 1, 2008
  • Small Animal Division participants (Poultry, Pygmy Goat, Rabbit & Cavy) must be 5yrs old as of January 1, 2009

6.   UNIFORM:

  • 4-H, FFA & Grange members must wear their organization’s uniform items: hat, scarf or tie &  vest or jacket.
  • Independent Exhibitors must wear the fair’s official uniform of white button up shirt with a collar (no polo shirts), dark blue or white western style pants and leather style lace up or slip on type boot and a western style belt.
  • Exhibitors showing small animals may wear closed toe shoe or boot.

7.   EXHIBITOR OF THE YEAR AWARD:

  • This sponsored award will go to the eligible Adult and Junior Exhibitors earning the highest overall score.
  • Exhibitors are eligible when they exhibit in 3 or more non-animal departments and place in at least two departments.
  • Prizes won in all departments will count as follows:  5 points for each 1st place, 3 points for each 2nd, 1 point for each 3rd and an additional 5 points for each Best of Show.

8.   HOW AND WHEN TO ENTER:

  • Completed entry forms must be returned to the fair office or postmarked by 5:00 p.m. on the closing date for entries as noted in the Entry Schedule.
  • Mailed entry forms will be rejected if postmarked after closing dates.
  • Horse Show Department:  post entries will be accepted.
  • Exhibits must be brought to the fairgrounds during days and hours designated under Department and Division headings and in the Entry Schedule.
  • Exhibits not received during specified periods will not be accepted.

 

  • Exhibitor's name or other identification may NOT appear on the visible portion of any exhibit (except animals).
  • Exhibit cards will be pre-printed at the fair office and you will attach them when you bring your exhibits to the fair.  Please allow time to do this.
  • Following judging, exhibit cards will be opened by fair clerks for public viewing.

9.   CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS:

  • Exhibitors canceling their entries for any reason after the official date of closing for entries shall forfeit all entry fees paid, except with a written certificate by a qualified veterinarian
  • Veterinary certificates must state the date of inspection, nature of disqualification and must be filed with the fair office at least 24 hours prior to the opening of the fair (Veterinarian's letterhead required.)
  • No refunds of $5.00 or less will be made (including overpayments).

10. AWARDS & PREMIUM CHECKS:

  • Placement of ribbons does not guarantee awards; only the official placing as indicated on the judging sheet shall determine awards.
  • Premium award checks will be mailed to the  exhibitor's address as given on the entry form as soon after the close of the fair as possible (within three weeks).
  • Premium checks not cashed within 90 days will be void.
  • If you don’t receive your check within four weeks, please call the Fair office.

11. RELEASE OF EXHIBITS:

  • Auction animals will be released starting at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug 9th. All other animals will be released starting at 7:00 p.m.
  • Cats, Dogs and Horses will be released as specified in Department rules.
  • All non-animal exhibits will be released on Monday, Aug. 10th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • The Fair reserves the right to dispose of exhibits not claimed during specified release period.
  • No watchmen will be furnished after official release periods.

12. VETERINARIAN:

  • The official Del Norte County Fair veterinarian is TBA.


13. An EXHIBITOR’S PASS:

  • Passes may be purchased after exhibits have been accepted for judging.
  • Exhibitors will receive an Exhibit Acceptance Slip upon delivery of exhibits to the fairgrounds which may then be brought to the office to purchase an Exhibitor’s Pass.
  • Exhibitor’s Pass prices will be $14.00 for Adults, and $7.00 for Juniors or Senior Citizens.
  • Only one Exhibitor Pass will be sold per Exhibitor. Good for all 4 days of the fair.
  • Those who pay $10.00 or more in entry fees will receive ONE (1) free pass per Exhibitor.
  • Exhibitor’s Passes are non-transferable.
  • Holders of a valid Exhibitor’s Pass shall be admitted to the fair daily when presenting the pass to the gate attendant.
  • Lost Exhibitor Passes will be not be replaced.
  • The Del Norte County Fair reserves the right to issue and sell passes which are deemed to be in the best interest of the Del Norte County Fair.

14. IDENTIFICATION:

  • All 4-H, FFA, and Grange exhibitors who enter exhibits and/or contests in the 4-H, FFA or Grange Departments of the Del Norte County Fair for the purpose of receiving ribbons paid for by the Fair and for which judges fees are paid by the Fair, shall have a valid 4-H/FFA/Grange wrist band, wristbands will cost $1.00, which may be obtained from the
  • 4-H Program Rep, FFA instructor, or Grange leader.
  • WRISTBANDS WILL COST $1.00
  • Those not holding a valid wrist band must purchase either an Exhibitor’s Pass, a regular admission ticket or a season ticket.
  • A reasonable number of 4-H/FFA/Grange leaders and/or parents from each club who have been designated to work at the Fair with 4-H, FFA, or Grange livestock clubs for necessary supervision and instruction of members, may also receive a wrist band (wristbands will cost $1.00)  from their Rep, Instructor, or Leader.

15. EACH EXHIBITOR MUST SHOW HIS OR HER OWN ANIMAL:

  • Exceptions can be granted only by the Auction or Livestock Committee and the Fair Manager.

16. VEHICLES:

  • No vehicles, except fair owned vehicles, will be allowed to enter the fairgrounds (other than the Main & North Parking Lots) between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily.
  • Unauthorized vehicles that enter prior to that time must be removed by 9:00 a.m.
  • Horse and livestock trailers are to enter through the North parking lot "Back Gate" only.
  • No parking around the livestock barns. This is a fire safety issue.
  • Livestock Parking Passes can be purchased for $5.00 each.

17. PARKING, CAMPING & RV HOOKUPS:

  • A charge of $12.00 per day will be made for Recreational Vehicles or other units desiring to hookup to electrical pedestals in the Livestock Parking Lot.
  • Other campers must pay a fee of $20.00 (for the duration of  the fair) at the Fair Office and display the receipted camping or parking permit.
  • Each 4-H, FFA, or Grange Club will be allocated one RV site to be assigned by the Fair.
  • Camping facilities are available on a “first come, first served” basis AND NOT BEFORE MONDAY, JULY 13, 2009.
  • Electrical hookups will be made from proper power pedestals only. Running electrical cords to wall plug outlets in buildings is prohibited.
  • Livestock Parking Passes can be purchased for $5.00 each.

18. PETS AND OTHER ANIMALS:

  • Animals other than those entered in the Fair and Service Dogs will not be allowed on the grounds.
  • All other animals must remain in the camping area and be properly contained at all times. (Dogs must be on leashes etc…)

19. UN-CHAPERONED YOUTH:

  • No un-chaperoned 4-H, FFA, or Grange youth will be allowed in the barns after 9:00 p.m.
  • All un-chaperoned youth around the fairgrounds and livestock barns will be asked to leave after midnight.
  • Any drinking of alcoholic beverages by a youth exhibitor will be cause for forfeiture of all prizes and the exhibitor will be asked to take his or her exhibit(s) home.

20. LIABILITY LIMITS:

  • The 41st DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION reserves the right to limit the number of entries in any Division or Class.
  • Each Exhibitor, by signing the entry form, agrees to hold harmless the fair, its officers, agents and employees from any and all claims and losses accruing or resulting to any and all persons in connection with that Exhibitor’s participation in the Fair and from any and all claims and losses accruing or resulting to any person, firm or corporation who may be injured or damaged as a result of that participation.

 

Judges

In an attempt to insure impartiality, the Del Norte County Fair secures judges for most categories from outside the community. The dedication and effort of these judges is to be commended as their fees, while sufficient to cover travel costs, are inadequate compensation for the hours they give to our fair. A special “THANK YOU” to these judges who will be serving us this year.

Agriculture Department

ADULT & JUNIOR DEPARTMENTS
These departments are open to all juniors and seniors without restriction as to residence. 
Junior classes are listed immediately after Adult classes in each department.

 

1.   Entry forms are due July 25th. 

  • Exhibits will be received in the Home Arts Building on Wednesday, August 5th, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will be released on Monday, Aug 10th  from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Produce which becomes wilted or over ripe during the fair will be removed from display and may be replaced by exhibitors on Saturday, Aug. 8th from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. only.

2.   Exhibits cannot be wrapped (except herbs).

  • Enter only the number of specimens requested.  Uniformity of size is important.
  • The quality desired in agricultural products is that which brings the best financial return in the commercial market.
  • Exhibits must be at least equal in maturity to the state of ripeness required by California Agricultural Code Section 42513 in order to be eligible for premium awards
  • “Mature” means a stage of ripeness that will insure completion of the ripening process to a degree that will insure palatability after removal of the product from the tree, plant or vine.
  •  "Over ripe”  means having an advance stage of maturity which causes the product to be undesirable for human consumption in a fresh state.

3.   VEGETABLES: Unless otherwise noted the type desired for exhibit will be the uniform commercial grade rather than overgrown.

Floriculture Department

1.   Entry forms are due July 25th. 

  • The name of the plant or flower MUST BE on the entry form.
  • Exhibits will be accepted only on Wednesday, August 5th from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Exhibits are to be delivered to the floral building.
  • Exhibit Cards will be pre-printed and will be attached when you bring your exhibits to the fair.  Please allow time to do this.
  • Exhibits will be released on Monday, August 10th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

2.   Entry is open to amateur growers who care for their own garden exhibits (occasional help allowed). No help with arrangements.

3.   When the number of plants or cut flowers is indicated for a class, the exhibition of any other quantity will disqualify the exhibit. Use of artificial flowers/foliage or tissue paper is not allowed; use of foil is discouraged. All potted material must be rooted and growing.

4.   Exhibitors must supply drainage saucers for all potted plants and containers, except specimens. (A Specimen is an entry that is not an arrangement of bouquet) All flowers in specimen class must have their own foliage if foliage is grown on the stem with flower. No dressing, wiring or filler allowed.

5.   The following should be disbudded: Carnations;  Roses (except floribunda rambler or cluster type);  Dahlias (except pompon or miniature); and Chrysanthemums (except hardy and azalea or cushion type). All roses must be exhibited with two or more sets of leaves.

6.   Attention should be given to relationship of container to plant material. Including cleanliness of containers.

7.   FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS: should not be planted; must be completed at home (tables will be provided for last minute details only). All arrangements must be securely fastened. Foliage and accessories are permitted unless otherwise stated; succulents are classed as foliage. Mats, stands and small pebbles used to cover frog pin are not counted as accessories. Dried flowers are not allowed except in "Special Arrangements" Division. The "Novice Arrangements" Division is open only to exhibitors who have never won a blue ribbon in arrangements.

8.   If needed, assistance will be available to carry heavy entries from the parking lot to the Floral Bldg.

9.   On Saturday, exhibitors are strongly encouraged to replace cut specimens from 9:00 am to 10:00 am.

SHOW & ENTRY RULES

The Crescent City Fuchsia Society will be the organization responsible for the registration and acceptance of all entries for the Del Norte County Fair Fuchsia Show.
Plants will be accepted for registration between the hours of 12:00 noon and 6 pm on Wednesday, August 5th in the Dining Room at the fairgrounds.
All entries must be registered to participate in the Fuchsia Show.
All entries will be under the control of the show chairperson during the show.
No show plant may be removed from the show without the chairperson’s approval.
Any entry showing evidence of disease or pest infestation will be disqualified from both the show/or plant sale and removed from the area.
This action may be ordered by either the show chairperson or the show judges.
All show and sale plants must have appropriate labels clearly identifying the fuchsia species or variety name.

There will be two classes for fuchsia show exhibitors:
NOVICE - A person who has participated in AFS sanctioned Fuchsia Shows for 3 years or less. A red registration card will be used for these show entries.
ADVANCED - A person who has participated in AFS sanctioned Fuchsia shows for more than 3 years. A blue registration card will be used for show entries.
JUDGING:
Judging will begin at approximately 8:30 am, Thursday, July 6st. Judges and assigned helpers will have access to the show area. The show area will be closed to both club members and the public during the judging process. Judges are certified for this task by the American Fuchsia Society. Show plants will be judged using current American Fuchsia standards. The decisions of the judges will be final.
Judges this year are Sue Randal & Diane Keesee, both AFS certified judges.

The show and the plant sale will close at 4 pm on Sunday. Exhibitors may pick up their show plants and/or sale plants between 3 pm and 5 pm or make special arrangements with the show chairperson. Any plants not picked up by their owner by 5 pm will become the property of the Crescent City Fuchsia Society.
AWARDS: Ribbons for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in each division. Special ribbons will be awarded for 1st & 2nd best of show, both novice and advanced. Special awards for 1st & 2nd with the most points, both novice and advanced.

DIVISION 111: “OUR FAVORITE RECIPE”

1 ½ cup flour
3 Tbsp cocoa
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking soda


½ tsp salt
1 tsp vinegar

1 cup water

Put dry ingredients into a large bowl. Add liquids. Mix well. Pour in greased 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

  4. All canning must be in sealed, standard jars (those specifically designed for canning) of clear or sculptured glass.  No paraffin seals.  Rings are required.
  5. Entries showing evidence of mold will be disqualified.
  6. All entries being considered for cash awards, which have not been otherwise eliminated, will be opened.
  7. Meat Exhibits that have been opened may be claimed by the exhibitor immediately after judging.
  8. Non-acid foods (fish, meats, poultry, vegetables) must be canned under pressure.
  9. Low acid foods (figs, very ripe  pears, tomatoes, etc.) should be made more acidic by adding lemon juice.
  10. Tomatoes and Fruits, including their juices, must be processed in boiling water bath.
  11. Water bath method must be used. Open kettle method is no longer recommended by the USDA. Boiling
  12. Exhibitors must supply their own labels.
  13. Each jar MUST be labeled showing:
    • NAME OF PRODUCT
    • DATE OF CANNING
    • METHOD OF PROCESSING.

  • Photos must be the work of the exhibitor within one year of July 31, 2009. Processing or mounting may have been completed by someone other than the exhibitor, except in the "Dark Room Techniques" Division.  Exhibitors in Division 174 must have done all processing and developing.  Original photos must be entered, not photocopies.
  • Fair management and/or the Department Superintendent reserve the right to reject any exhibit which may be offensive to fair patrons; no nudes or obscene material will be accepted. Entries must be matted. No frames or glass. You may use mat board, poster board, card stock or similar weight material.  Photos must be at least 5x7 on a 8x10 mat, 8x10 photo on a 11x14 mat or 11x14 photo on a 16x20 mat.
  • All photos must be covered in protective plastic and have a HANGING CLIP attached.

ATTENTION, YOUTH GROUPS:  Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire, Sports Groups, Church Groups, School Groups – Here’s your chance to show what your group is all about!

1.   Entry forms are due July 18th. Booths may be installed in the Home Arts Building beginning on Thursday, July 30th (8a.m. to 5p.m.).  Booths must be complete by Tuesday, August 4th at 8:00 p.m. Perishable items only may be added to exhibits on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and may be replaced if wilted on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Booths must be removed on Monday, August 10th between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

2.   Booths should educate the public about the organization and its goals, the projects and activities that help meet those goals, and the contributions of the organization to the community.

3.   Booth spaces provided by the fair measure 8' by 8' in size. Booths must be designed, installed and decorated by organization members. Parents and leaders may help install any aspect of booth where the health or safety of the  member is at risk. Awards will not be given to groups violating this rule.

4.   LIMIT: One booth per Organization.

  1. Entry forms are due 25th . Photographs must be delivered to the Home Arts Building on Friday & Saturday, July 31st and August 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and will be released on Monday, Aug 10th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  1. Fair management and/or the Department  Superintendent reserve the right to reject any exhibit which may be offensive to fair patrons; no nudes or obscene material will be accepted. ENTRIES MUST BE MATTED. NO FRAMES OR GLASS. You may use mat board, poster board, card stock or similar weight material. Photos must be at least 5X7 on a 8x10 mat, 8x10 photo on a 11x14 mat or 11x14 photo on a 16x20 mat.
  1. All photos must be covered in protective plastic and have a HANGING CLIP attached.
  1. When delivered, each piece must be marked with the exhibitor’s Name, Division & Classon the back of the mat.
  1. Photos should be selected as to good taste for family viewing.

 

LIMIT: 1 entry per class per exhibitor. No frames or glass

Special Instructions for Class 10, Manipulated Photos:

  • Any two-dimensional image, which originated in a lens-fitted camera device and was then manipulated with a computer. This includes images captured by digital cameras or video.
  • Images must contain original photographic elements created by the photographer.
  • Enter two images neatly mounted on 1 - 16 x 20 white or black board, one the original, the second the final results.
  • On the back of the board include a brief description of methods used to achieve final image.

 

JUNIOR POETRY

  1. Entry Forms and Poems are due no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 25th.
  1. Junior exhibitors must put their date of birth on the entry form.
  1. Adult Poetry Department Rules Apply to the Junior Department.

 

LIMIT: There is no limit on the number of poems that may be entered.
